Industry, space and research players launch HydroVenture, the first operational space hydrology center for global water monitoring and management

Initiated by CS Group, Magellium, and vorteX-io, the consortium of companies also comprising BRL Ingénierie, CERFACS, CLS, HydroMatters, MEOSS, SERTIT and the Data Terra Research Infrastructure (CNES, CNRS, INRAE, IRD), is committed to developing an industry of excellence in Space Hydrology, supporting the French France 2030 and the European Destination Earth programs, and contributing to the United Nations’ Early Warnings for All initiative.

Toulouse, March 28, 2024 – CS Group, Magellium and vorteX-io, winners of the France 2030 call for tenders for the use of spatial data in water monitoring and management, join forces with other partners to announce the launch of HydroVenture, the first center for operational spatial hydrology. This initiative aims to develop an industry of excellence in space hydrology, offering new products and services for observing, modeling and managing the planet’s water resources in real time.

Faced with the urgent need to improve water knowledge and governance on a global scale, HydroVenture proposes to merge spatial data, digital models and field hydrological information for real-time management of continental hydrological systems. This innovative approach overcomes current challenges linked to the heterogeneity of water data, the lack of shared cross-border data and the physical limitations of existing ground-based sensor networks. By combining data already available and integrating that collected by future space missions, HydroVenture paves the way for in-depth analyses and forecasts that will help monitor water stocks, prevent the risk of floods and drought, and improve water quality.

Comprising leading players in the fields of hydrology and space, most of whom are members of Aerospace Valley, the consortium will meet the needs of private companies, government agencies, and inter-governmental and international organizations involved in water resource management. This unprecedented public-private collaboration will support the development of a French industry of excellence in spatial hydrology, contributing to the national objectives of the Water Plan and the France 2030 Plan. It is also part of a European perspective, capitalizing on the complementarity of member states, European directives, and the ambitions of environmental programs such as DestinE and Copernicus. Last but not least, the consortium will be in a privileged position to contribute to the early warning services called for by the UN by the end of 2027.

HydroVenture will actively encourage the participation of research laboratories, startups, SMEs, industrial groups and public sector players. Together, they will form a dynamic partnership to feed data into the Earth’s future digital hydrological twin, and develop powerful new products and services to meet water-related challenges in various economic and geopolitical sectors, including transport, agriculture, health and civil security.

“HydroVenture represents an open and dynamic collaboration between scientific experts specializing in space observation data, in-situ and numerical modeling, brought together within the Data Terra IR and its THEIA cluster, notably involving CNES, CNRS, INRAE and IRD. The consortium is the continuation of a decades-long commitment to research and development, and a strategy of promoting scientific and industrial innovations strongly supported by CNES.”
Frédéric HUYNH, Director of the Data Terra research infrastructure (CNRS, CNES,
IRD, INRAE, …)

HydroVenture will be organized around three pillars: an Operational Monitoring Center for real-time monitoring of water cycles, a Research, Valorization and Development facility associated with a collaborative Living Lab, and a commercial service offering value-added solutions accessible via a marketplace.
